Your puppy will want to relieve himself immediately after eating, upon walking, after playing, or after any lengthy period of time has elapsed. Take him out the same door each time, to the same place in the yard and praise him each time he produces. If he has an accident in the house do not scold him unless you catch him in the act. No matter how smart they appear, dogs do not understand what they are being punished for, unless the correction is immediate (within 6 seconds). Never call your dog to you and then punish it. Always praise your pet when it does whatever you wish and be consistent with what’s acceptable and what’s not. Keep commands simple. For example, don’t say “sit down” or “lie down”. Instead, say “sit” or “down”. Never leave string, rope, pantyhose, plastic bags, or wire around where your puppy can play with it. Invest in a crate; a dog thinks of a crate as a safe den, not a cage.
Please remember that you are welcome to call me, night or day, should you need my help at (301) 499-8708. I wish you many years of pleasure and warn you that you will soon develop an addiction to Mastiffs! There is no greater companion. As stated in The Cynographia Britannica in 1800.
“What the lion is to the Cat,
The Masiff is to the Dog,
The noblest of the family;
He stands alone, and
All other sink before him.”
